Okay, so even though the whole right and left brain thing has been more or less debunked, it’s still deeply ingrained into our culture. And, at our desks, we’re definitely using logic to run reports, crunch numbers, and get things done. So how do you use the proverbial right brain to keep creativity in your business – and make everything better? Here are a few ways to do just that.
Keep creativity in your business by brainstorming
Brainstorming is more than just writing a list of ideas. Sometimes it means writing down all of the bad ideas, too. That way, you can practice turning those bad ideas into good ones. Now THAT is a great way to get the creative juices flowing!
“You have to free your brain to roam to places that are a little impractical, and innovation consultants have come up with some great ways to encourage that. One of my favorites comes from Legrand, who tells people in group brainstorming sessions to try to come up with the WORST possible ideas that they can think of. … Once you have a list of really, really bad suggestions – and coming up with them does force your brain to work in a different way – you try to flip them over into the positive.” – quote by Amanda Lang
Spending 30 minutes brainstorming on a regular basis will do more than just answer a question. It’ll also change how you think, allowing you greater problem-solving skills in your everyday life.
Slow down to see new inspiration
In today’s fast-paced world, we’re accustomed to instant answers and ideas. Unfortunately, our brains don’t work that day. So when you need a new idea, slow down. Take a break. Go for a slow, leisurely walk. Practice mindfulness to keep your mind in the moment – and then watch the inspiration slam right into you.
“If you’re having difficulty coming up with new ideas, then slow down. For me, slowing down has been a tremendous source of creativity. It has allowed me to open up — to know that there’s life under the earth and that I have to let it come through me in a new way. Creativity exists in the present moment. You can’t find it anywhere else.” – quote by Natalie Goldberg
Slowing down may seem counterintuitive – but it gives our brains the time it needs to process information, allowing those synapses to fire and make better connections. And that’s when we’ll start seeing possible solutions clearly – and even be able to tell which one is the best for our specific needs and circumstances.
Open yourself up to boldness and taking chances
Finally, open yourself to the idea of being bolder, and of taking some chances. Routines are fantastic and safe – but they aren’t where innovation takes place. So if you need something new, be open to taking a chance.
“I wondered about the explorers who’d sailed their ships to the end of the world. How terrified they must have been when they risked falling over the edge; how amazed to discover, instead, places they had seen only in their dreams.” – quote by Jodi Picoult, Handle with Care
You don’t have to go out and buy a boat to make a new discovery. Just be willing to take a chance on living your dream. That way, you’ll be able to see it, rather than being safely jealous of those around you who made the leap.
Training your brain to think more creatively is a process that takes time. But as you slow down, give your brain the time and practice it needs to be creative, and then allow yourself to take new risks, you’re going to see some amazing rewards.
